Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has tragically died, according to reports from Portuguese and Spanish media.
Jota, a key player for Liverpool Football Club, joined the team in September 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The transfer was valued at over £40 million. During his time at Anfield, he played a significant role in the club’s success, including scoring six goals in Liverpool’s most recent Premier League-winning campaign.
Born in Portugal, Jota began his professional football career in his home country before moving to Atlético Madrid in Spain.
He eventually made his way to the English Premier League, where he established himself as a prominent figure in the Liverpool squad. Known for his skill and goal-scoring ability, Jota quickly became a fan favorite.
Outside of football, Jota was also known for his love of gaming.
He regularly streamed on Twitch and even owned his own eSports team.
Just two weeks before his death, Jota married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso. The couple had been together since 2012 and shared three children.
Jota had proposed to Cardoso in July 2022 and later shared photos of their wedding, writing: “June 22, 2025. Yes to forever.”
The 28-year-old was reportedly involved in a fatal crash near the town of Zamora in northwestern Spain.
Spanish news agency EFE confirmed details of the incident early Thursday morning.
