Tourist Trapped In Active Volcano Tragically Dies Before Rescuers Get To Her

The tourist was trapped for four days after passersby heard screams from inside the volcano’s crater.

Juliana Marins, 26, was found dead at the bottom of the active volcano, after a four-day search for her body.

The influencer was traveling in Indonesia when she decided to join a group of tourists on a guided hike of Mount Rinjani, in the hotspot of Lombok.

They set off in the early morning, but cold temperatures and steep climbs meant that the hike quickly became complex.

Speaking to Brazilian TV, one member of the group noted that the excursion was ‘very hard,’ and that viability throughout had been poor.

Mount Rinjani is the second-tallest volcano in Indonesia, and the group was made up of five people, as well as a tour guide.

The 26-year-old was well-versed in the dangers, having been solo traveling Southeast Asia since February.

Upon reaching the summit, Marins and a friend decided to explore the crater rim, but it was at this point that the 26-year-old began to struggle.

Two tour guides on the mountain had told her to take a break, but left her on the trail alone.

Her sister Marianna told the Brazilian press: “She didn’t know where to go.

“She didn’t know what to do.”

Alone and unsure, the young woman slipped to her death, at a height of 984ft.

Marins slipped and fell at around 6:30 a.m., plummeting down a slope, as per the BBC.

She managed to cling onto a ravine at the bottom of the active volcano, but it was a key error from the rescue team that ultimately led to her death.

Passersby reportedly heard screams coming from the location of her fall, as well as cries for help.

But despite surviving the fall, which is a miracle in its own right, Marins was too injured to climb back up for food, water, and shelter.

It took the rescue team eight hours to be dispatched, and extreme weather conditions further impacted their search.

After being unable to find her, they tried again the following day.

But Marins had taken yet another deep plunge into the volcano, making her even harder to locate.

After a four-day search, rescue teams eventually found her body buried 1,600 feet inside the volcano.

After numerous attempts to save her life, Marin’s family took to Instagram to announce the tragic news.

They wrote: “The rescue team managed to reach the place where Juliana Marins was.

“With great sadness, we inform you that she did not survive.

“We remain very grateful for all the prayers, messages of affection, and support we have received.”

Users on social media have suggested that had the rescue operation been more efficient, the outcome could have been very different.

One speculated: “The tour company left her. The rescue failed.”
